Musing Mondays - What I'm going to read next & some of my favourite characters

Musing Mondays - September 5, 2016

Musing Mondays is a weekly meme that asks you to choose one of the following prompts to answer:

  • I’m currently reading…
  • Up next I think I’ll read…
  • I bought the following book(s) in the past week…
  • I’m super excited to tell you about (book/author/bookish-news)…
  • I’m really upset by (book/author/bookish-news)…
  • I can’t wait to get a copy of…
  • I wish I could read ___, but…
  • I blogged about ____ this past week…
Up next I think I'll read:
Nevermore (Supernatural #1) by Keith R.A. DeCandido

Here's the Goodreads summary:

Twenty years ago they lost their mother to a mysterious and demonic supernatural force. In the years after, their father, John, taught them about the paranormal evil that lives in the dark corners and on the back roads of America...and he taught them how to kill it.
Sam and Dean have hit New York City to check out a local rocker's haunted house. But before they can figure out why a lovesick banshee in an '80s heavy-metal T-shirt is wailing in the bedroom, a far more macabre crime catches their attention. Not far from the house, two university students were beaten to death by a strange assailant. A murder that's bizarre even by New York City standards, it's the latest in a line of killings that the brothers soon suspect are based on the creepy stories of legendary writer Edgar Allan Poe.
Their investigation leads them to the center of one of Poe's horror classics, face-to-face with their most terrifying foe yet. And if Sam and Dean don't rewrite the ending of this chilling tale, a grisly serial killer will end their lives forevermore.

I am currently binge watching my way through Supernatural seasons 9 and 10 for the first time right at the moment. And I just finished watching seasons 1-8 again so that I could remember what was going on for Season 9. So now that I am thoroughly enthralled in the show, and then I discovered that there are books. Last week I found a Chapters 10% off card in my wallet so I bought the first 2 Supernatural novels.

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION:  Name your best-loved character from a fiction book.

You're going to make me choose just one?! Oh that's so hard! I have several favourite fictional characters from books, so I'm going to go with a top 3 list and tell you why they're among my favourites.

1. Lucy Pevensie

It was a tough call between Alice from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland or Lucy from The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. But I chose Lucy because she has been one of my favourites and one of my biggest inspirations since I was a little kid. No matter who challenged her beliefs she held true to them. Lucy was one of the earliest characters to taught me the importance of being true to myself. Her wonder and awe upon her first arrival in Narnia is something that never ceases to make me smile, and her willingness to be the first of her siblings to forgive Edmund even though she was the worst hurt by him has always impressed me.

2. Sirius Black

I have always had a soft spot for Sirius Black since the moment he was introduced. His is the backstory I have always and will always want most. I want to see the happiness in his life, because most of what we got to see in the books we have was his sadness. He wasn't a perfect character, not by any means, he was flawed beyond belief, but out of everyone he loved Harry the most and he was taken from him far too soon. His death was the one that hit me the hardest because it happened at time when I was experiencing the loss of my own father, so Harry losing Sirius made me feel a new sense of kinship with Harry from that moment on.

3. Queen Cimorene

She's the main character in the first three books of the Enchanted Forest Chronicles and she is glorious. In the first book she's a princess whose whole purpose is to be completely opposite to the usual fantasy princess tropes. Cimorene is such a sassy, badass character that there's literally not a thing to dislike about her. She's my favourite character in a cast of fantastic characters.

  1. This book sounds like a great read...and I don't even care for this genre all that much. I would make an exception for this one. Must add it to my wish list.

I loved Sirius; and I agree--we need his backstory.

Hope you'll drop in and see what I blogged about today at http://thebookconnectionccm.blogspot.com/2016/09/musing-mondays-sep-5.html

  2. The show is awesome so I am hopeful the novels will be the same.

We definitely need his backstory, his and Regulus's.

  3. Awww you know how much I love Sirius but Fred's death hit me harder, it was unnecessary whereas as much as I hated it, I think Sirius' death was vital to the plot.

    1. I agree with you about Fred's death I'd say it hit me the second hardest. I think with Sirius it was just the timing of it for me.
